We generally associate the mango with latitudes far lower than China, but believe it or not there are a few tasty varieties that thrive in the Middle Kingdom too. May is when the harvest is at its peak but it continues on through July. So get some while the getting is still good! Here are some of our favorites…
Da Tai and Xiao Tai 大台、小台
Harvested in Hainan, these vibrantly colored mangoes are widely available throughout the city. They’re extremely fragrant and you can smell them from a few feet away. With a firm flesh, it’s refreshingly sweet.
Hong Jin Long 红金龙
This elongated kidney-shaped variety blushes when it ripens. It has a delicate fragrance and is naturally sweet with a succulent, peach-like texture. It’s perfect for shakes and smoothies.
Jin Huang 金煌
Smaller than Hong Jin Long, this variety from Taiwan is plump and juicy with a subtle sweetness. Because it is considerably less fibrous, it’s ideal for a classic Hong Kong-style mango pudding.
Jidan 鸡蛋
The name alone should tell you about its size—‘jidan’ means egg. It is surprisingly fragrant with a pleasant sweetness, but the fibrous texture coupled with the miniscule size puts this one at the bottom of our list. But still, it’s a mango and that automatically qualifies it as being delicious in our book.
